Penultimate Post

The weather we had over this past weekend was absolutely gorgeous. Sunny and warm with a slightly cool breeze. It was perfect gardening weather.

On Saturday afternoon the sky presented us with a special treat ... I'll call it a cloud rainbow. Unfortunately the picture doesn't do it justice. You can click on the picture to get a larger view.

It contained all the colours of a rainbow but it was made up a wispy thin cloud streaks. I've never seen than formation before and I'm glad we had the camera close by ... beautiful.

So, I'm heading into my last full week on the 100 meter diet and I'm surprised to find myself looking forward to crossing the finish line. The freezer is nearly empty and I'm tired of baking bread and making noodles. I actually said to Barb this morning, "I would happily pay someone to bake me a loaf of bread".

I have 1 jar of pickled beets left, 2 jars of regular pickles, some frozen zucchini, frozen butternut squash, a few onions, some goat meat and of course eggs and goat milk. Survivable, yes ... Enjoyable, no.

Our local farmers market (The Aberfoyle Farmer's Market) opens on May 28th and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll be like a kid in a candy store ... buying as much fresh produce as I can. I hope someone there sells fresh bread ;)

One more week ... I can do this!

  1. Tickled for you that you are so close to meeting your goal! Just curious...did you save tons of money by doing this??

  2. Yes, our food costs dropped considerably. I didn't track the actual savings, that would have been difficult to measure, but I would estimate that we saved at least $200 a month while on this diet. Probably more.

Another benefit was that I produced almost no garbage over the past year. Almost everything that I bought came in a recyclable or compostable container. The only exception was the yogurt and cheese culture packages. They ended up in the garbage.

It makes sense ... if you don't buy pre-packaged foods you don't have any packaging to throw away ;)

P.S. Mother Nature decided to end my diet with a bang. Our home was struck by lightening on Monday afternoon. The electrical surge fried our oven, TV, phone and the kids Wii. So much for all the money I saved on the 100 meter diet. Maybe this is Karma's way of reminding me that this journey wasn't about the money.

  3. I am extremely proud of your accomplishments and have enjoyed following your year long journey. I'm curious as to what indulgence you're looking forward to....coffee, beer, wine, chocolate, cheesies?! I know many things will feel like an indulgence but there must be something you're craving!

  4. I must admit that I have allowed some beverages to sneak back into my diet this month. I've been drinking only water for months now! I've have enjoyed coffee, beer and wine lately.

As for food, I haven't strayed from the diet ... except for special occassions. I'm looking forward to carrots and fresh tomatoes. I also have a really strong craving for gazpacho soup. And just thinking about a well aged hard cheese makes me salivate!
